  1. From Dingle Yang, one of the student critiques for Xi Zheng's Trash Can project.

The project has shown a successful example of achieving functional needs and aesthetical values. Using individuals of simple geometry to create a new form in order to emphasise the simplicity of the design. As a shelf, the design has achieved the task of storing ideas, and reflects how Xi has intepreted the idea of Trash Can. The project as a whole is practical and reflecting creativity.

  2. Xi’s project was confidently presented. The shelving unit holds various ideas – drawings, photos, notes – in its slots. Its orientation and shape can be adjusted to the user’s needs to fit certain objects and be used to store scrap materials. The model was well made, but perhaps an opportunity missed was to different the project more from a regular shelf by looking at different ways it can be joined, other than just by rubber bands. Perhaps these joints could have a function in the storage of ideas itself. Although Xi looked at two different types of materials, wood and plastic, this could have been explored a bit more and her idea of using lots of components to form the shelf could have been explored more in terms of shapes of components and how this might affect the objects stored in it. However, the project presented was of high production quality and was well presented.

  3. Xi’s project displayed a good understanding of the brief. Different design ideas and material pieces can be stored by the shelving units. the project fits the studio environment, and it can also effect this enviroment in changing the shape. it s interesting to be a shelf that not only for storing but also can be played with. but an opportunity that was perhaps missed was showing the variety of shapes in the poster.
